Movement Workshops

January 28, 2016 Leave a comment

We are fortunate to have with a very talented ongoing volunteer, Conlan Mansfield – taking Streetfront through a series of movement exercises. We have done exercises in ground work (crawls), reflex’s, rope work (Navy Seals method), one and two-foot jumps, rings, and rolls so far. These exercises are designed to improve how we move our bodies through space, posture, flexibility, agility, strength and overall fitness.

Canucks Visit Streetfront

November 9, 2015 Leave a comment

After our return from the bowling tournament we had our annual visit from Vancouver Canucks Rod Brathwaite (Manager, Community Partnerships & Hockey Development). Rod was joined this time by Alfred De Vera (Media Relations) who was eager to meet and speak with our students.

They left us with a gift of box seats for Dec. 26th game against the Edmonton Oilers. Thank you Canucks for this great opportunity!

3rd Annual Alt. Bowling Tournament

November 7, 2015 Leave a comment

Today Streetfront participated in the 3rd Annual Alt. Bowling Tournament at REVS along with 10 other VSB alternative schools. While we didn’t win the Bergeron Cup we had several strikes, too many gutter balls to count and a lot of fun! Thanks to Foundation Alt. for hosting yet another fun tournament and congratulations to Outreach Alternative for winning the tournament!!

I wish the general public can see these tournaments, the annual Arts Fair and Sports Days when Vancouver’s Alt. Schools come together because they would see a diverse, talented and energetic group of youth.

Cycling at the Burnaby Velodrome

October 31, 2015 Leave a comment

On Thursday our students had the fantastic opportunity to try their hand at the sport of cycling on a velodrome track. There wasn’t anyone in the Streetfront class (students and staff included) who could say they were not intimidated by this sport that sees one cycling around a track that had up to 47 degrees in pitch! We would like to thank Nikki from Urban Native Youth Association and Michael from Burnaby Veldrome for giving us this opportunity and expert guidance. We hope to return soon to this wonderful sport.

We had 18 current and past Streetfront students run in the annual Seattle Marathon. The weather was cold but sunny and the youth did a fantastic job, especially those running their first full or half marathon! Well done all!!

Vancouver Alternative School’s Annual Volleyball Tournament

February 7, 2014 Leave a comment

Streetfront hosted their annual volleyball tournament. This is always a highlight of the year with over 100 kids in attendance, all vying for that coveted trophy. The competition was fierce with numerous games coming right down to the final point.

As the 6 game round robin came to an end we had 4 teams remaining – 2 senior alternative programs: Spectrum and Outreach and 2 junior alternative programs: Streetfront and Eastside. Once the dust settled – Spectrum was crowned champions.

Thanks to all the students and staff who made this such a memorable tournament.
