Tetrahedron Backpacking Trip – Oct. 14-16, 2015

Streetfront took 11 students on a three-day backpacking trip to Tetrahedron Provincial Park which is located just north of the town of Sechelt on our beautiful Sunshine Coast. This park boasts four wilderness cabins on a network of ex-logging roads and trails.

It has been 15+ years since I backpacked here and I must not wait that long again to return. Next time I will head to the Mt. Steele cabin and explore the higher elevations there.

The youth did very well, many on their first backpacking trip! We were extremely fortunate to have stellar weather with temperatures in the double digits and mild nights!!

VSB Canoe Blessing – Sept. 21, 2015

The Vancouver School Board and Britannia Community Services Centre in partnership have a carving pavilion on the Britannia campus. One of the first creations to come from this pavilion was a wonderful traditional First Nations canoe. On September 21 Streetfront & Outreach Alternatives joined VSB representatives and First Nations community members at Cates Park in North Vancouver for the blessing of the VSB canoe. It was an honour to be witnesses to the blessing.

STREETFRONT TAKES ON DEEP COVE ONCE AGAIN, AND ARE VICTORIOUS

It doesn’t take Streetfront long to get back into high gear. On only the 2nd Friday back with only 3 training runs prior, 11 allstars got their gear on, ignored the rain and hammered out a run from Britannia to Deep Cove, North Vancouver.

Special thanks to Constable Brandon Steele for running alongside us and to Barry Skillin for doing the pick up.

Great work kids.

Lighthouse Park Hike

Beautiful day and we got the Streetfront crew out to Lighthouse Park for a fabulous day.

Nothing more than watching kids play in a beautiful setting. Nothing on their minds other than being kids.

A near perfect day.

Bath Time for Bees

Last week’s monthly visit from the staff and volunteers from the Environmental Youth Alliance (EYA) had us learning about our Mason Bees and giving them some TLC. Opening the nest tubes we saw the difference in the male and female cocoon’s. We saw strong healthy cocoons and those that were affected by mites, maggots and other creatures determined to destroy our pollinators. Collecting all the cocoons they were then given a gentle bath and left to dry. Once dried they will be placed in a ziplock bag and stored in a fridge until spring. It was a excellent experience and felt good to be giving our crucial pollinators a better chance of survival.
